Publishing a children’s book: how long does it take?
Self-publishing a children’s book can take as little as 7 days. Once the layout of the book is complete with copyright information inserted, than moving forward to print, your book is published. Printing can take anywhere from 5 to 13 weeks depending on the location of your printing facility.
As an author, the standard process from the time you begin writing until the final delivery of books can create a longer timeframe. The first step after the book is written is the editing process. Writers need criticism as well as encouragement. It is always advised to have an editor review the spelling and grammar.
Next, an illustrator is hired. To improve communication, many authors provide a design brief, which will assist the artist with creating the illustrations for the book. It is best to coordinate the size, text page count, and other details from there. The timeframe for this step depends on the vision you are expressing to the illustrator and their own schedule.
Once the children’s book layout is complete, the next move is to the printing process. Proofing is the first step in printing. The standard proofing options are electronic or digital print on paper. When you are proofing, note some printers charge per page if you decide to swap a particular page out. Be sure all edits are complete before this stage: unless there was a crucial spelling or grammatical error, the text is set.
When all the proofs are finally approved, plates are made and the children’s book goes to press.
The time frame of printing will be subject to the printing company’s equipment. A printing company may use digital, sheet-fed, or on-demand printing. Depending on the quantity, on-demand printing is generally a 2-3 day process, digital printing typically takes 5-7 days, and offset printing takes roughly 7-10 days.
Organizing the layout and print production can consume a great deal of time, but having books produced for children will make the efforts meaningful.
